BOATS OF SPECIAL BOAT UNIT ELEVEN

PATROL BOAT LIGHT (PBL)

The PBL is 25 feet in length, eight feet wide, and weighs 3575 pounds. It is driven by two 155 horsepower outboard motors manufactured by Outboard Motor Corporation (OMC). Forward and reverse thrust are supplied by propellers. The hull is a modified "V" design and constructed of fiberglass. It is capable of speeds in excess of 35 knots. It is designed for coastal and riverine operations, primarily as a surveillance and early detection platform.

PATROL BOAT RIVER (PBR)

The PBR is 31 feet in length, 11 feet wide and weighs 17,000 pounds. Driven by two 6V53 Detroit Diesel engines which drive water-jet pumps instead of propellers, the PBR is capable of speeds in excess of 30 knots in less than 15 inches of water. A unique feature of the PBR is its ability to stop from full speed in about one boat length by reversing the pump discharge. It is manned by a crew of five, with the primary mission of riverine patrol and interdiction. Secondary missions include Special Operations Forces (SOF) insertion, extraction and support, Search and Rescue, and assault boat support.

MINI-ARMORED TROOP CARRIER (MATC)

The MATC is 36 feet in length, 13 feet wide, and weighs 27,000 pounds. It is capable of speeds in excess of 30 knots in less than 18 inches of water. Driven by two 6V92 Detroit Diesel engines which also drive water-jet pumps instead of propellers. The MATC can stop from full speed in one boat length by reversing the pump discharge. It is constructed of aluminum and manned by a crew of five, with the primary mission of insertion and extraction of SOF.
